Favourite streets in Copenhagen: Valby Langgade
Valby Langgade means The Long Street of Valby, and it is indeed long. From the Damhus Lake in the west to the Carlsberg area in the east, Valby Langgade is the local nerve that connects the suburb. This guide offers the best part of the street located downtown Valby. Here, the village vibe and local feeling makes Valby worth a visit.
Cosy cafes
If you are in need of large draft beers, burgers with fries or the ever-satisfying nachos with melted cheese and dips, you can’t miss the cosy café area just opposite Valby square. You will find Café Avanti, Café Ciré and Café Asta – the latter a part of Hotel Fy & Bi – located side by side on the sunny side of Valby Langgade where the tables are always buzzing. We especially love the old yellow-painted brick wall facade of Hotel Fy & Bi with the large poplar tree in front of it, both adding to the charming and romantic atmosphere of the café area.
Ciré and Asta both offer a classic cafe menu with well-known dishes like steaks, sandwiches, burgers, wholesome salads and a typical tapas style “board”. You can also have brunch – often as a buffet on the weekends – and pastry. For drinks, a variety of draft beer or special brews like Grimbergen or local micro brews, as well as Fairtrade coffee, tea and juices.
Avanti is Italian and has an extended menu with antipasti, pizza, fish, pasta and side orders. But you will also be able to order a burger, the classic Caesar Salad or a traditional Danish fish plate. In other words, the cafés of Valby are for all social occasions!
The coffee dealer Riccos
In the yellow house with red tiles, you will find Ricco’s Coffee Shop. Friends, family, self-employed, job hunters, dates and coffee-loving people alike go here for a chat in the cosy cushions of the coffee shop. Especially on the first floor, there’s room for the working folk with MacBooks day and night.
Ricco’s many coffee shops all over Copenhagen are your guarantee for great coffee and good vibes. In the morning, the smell of fresh coffee and freshly baked bread will soothe your soul, and you can buy the rustique buns with cheese, jam and accessories. The shop also has fresh sandwiches delivered every day for lunch, and you can of course buy a variety of pastry, cakes and chocolate for your coffee. When the sun is out, grab a spot against the yellow facade and watch as the suburban life moves slowly past you on the street.
Wine and drinks it is!
Are you looking for a buzz for the weekend or just a nice spot to enjoy great taste? The wine bar Malbeck and urban garden TH.Bar are some of the right choices.
Malbeck is a wine bar located in two spots in Copenhagen, and the Valby spot opened in the fall of 2018 (the other is on Istedgade in Vesterbro). The place has a low-key atmosphere and informal surroundings. Here, you will experience different and new wines from seven different countries – but the bar specialises in Argentinian wine. Just ask the sommelier. Also, there are awesome Argentinian snacks from Malbeck’s own shop in Torvehallerne in Nørrebro.
2019 will be the 5th season for TH.Bar, a cosy garden-enclave surrounded by green trees and coloured walls. Taste your way through Dark ‘n’ Stormy, Aperol Spritz and Czech draft beer. When the evening comes, the lights are lit in the wooden structure in the middle of the garden, and you will experience true Danish “hygge” during the warm summer nights. The green oasis also offers concerts and shared dinners, but otherwise you are free to bring your own food.
The cheese deli
A real institution – the cheese deli of Valby. If you are looking for mouth-watering salty and sweet goodies, look no further. The selection of cheese and charcuterie will be perfect for any tapas, picnic, lunch or dinner table, and the range of cheese varies from the soft and creamy to the strong and firm ones. Try the firm Fyrtårsosten from Thise with salt crystals that will melt on your tongue.
Add to this a great number of micro brews, Danish snaps from Bornholm, wine and sangria. There’s even coffee from a local roast brand in Køge, amazing liquorice from Danish brand Johan Bülow and Summerbird chocolate. For your tapas table, you can get great sweet and salty spreads and pastes, jams and the like – it is almost impossible to leave without purchasing anything!
Valby Fish
Another institution is Valby Fish, a store located in Valby for more than 100 years. Whether you need tuna steaks, turbot, monkfish, eel or fresh salmon, Valby Fish has you covered. When it’s the season, go get the lumpfish roe or the cod roe. The store also sells ready-made servings like ceviche or fish cakes.
Restaurants of Spinderiet
In Valby, the shopping centre and restaurant hub called Spinderiet attracts young and old for good times every day of the week. And in the part of Spinderiet facing the square at downtown Valby Langgade you’ll find some great places to eat for both lunch and dinner. The high-end sushi chain of Copenhagen, Sticks’n’Sushi, will please any lover of the Japanese kitchen. The selection of sushi is wide and very well-tasting, and the side-orders like sesame-fried edamame beans and oriental barbecued sticks goes very well with the restaurant’s beer, wine and coffee.
The burger chain Halifax is your guarantee of a great and tasty burger in Valby. Next to the sushi joint, you can get geography-themed burgers with accessories and bun of your own choice.
And finally, the arch-American family style restaurant Bone’s offers whatever your heart desires – spare-ribs, chili cheese tops, sauces, hot wings, onion rings and BBQ-marinated beef worth every penny. Grab your friends and family for a wholesome meal.
